Here's the thing. The tone you need is of a particular type--dynamic tone. It performs two functions:

Kicking exercises of any kind (defined as isolating the legs from the arms--and unavoidably as well from core-body rotation) can only aid in passive tone. Like in doing a plank exercise. Even side kicking is thus virtually useless with regard to dynamic tone.

I had given up kicking on a board over 20 years ago, yet had continued doing the equivalent of kicking sets (25 or 50 y repeats or kick-down, swim-back, or kick halfway, swim the rest) in Skating position--rotating to Sweet Spot to breathe--as recently as six years ago. But I finally realized the only effe ct of doing that (once I'd wired in details of the Skating position) were training my leg and trunk muscles to perform an activity for which I had no use.

It's also during this period that my 2BK has improved enormously, which I also don't think is incidental. I believe it's because my central nervous system no longer is exposed to 'confusion' over the highest-value role for my legs.
