這枚銅幣中心有一圓孔，以便與舊銅元有所區(qū)別，正面中央為紀(jì)值文字及弧形線圈，上緣有紀(jì)年文字，下緣有與銀圓換算關(guān)系的文字，背面為方袱型繞以嘉禾圖案。此套幣作為國(guó)家法定貨幣，計(jì)劃在全國(guó)范圍內(nèi)流通使用。發(fā)行之始，銀行界尚樂于接受，但民間阻滯，所以流通不廣。

背面嘉禾紋，嘉禾”，美禾，茁壯之禾，碩大之禾，祥瑞之禾也。東漢許慎《說文》云：“禾，嘉谷也。以二月而種，八月始熟，得時(shí)之中，故謂之禾。”王充《論衡·講瑞篇》云：“嘉禾生于禾中，與禾中異穗，謂之嘉禾?！惫湃硕嘁浴凹魏獭睘橄槿鹬?，與甘露醴泉并稱。如班固《漢書·公孫弘傳》云：“甘露降，風(fēng)雨時(shí)，嘉禾興。”也就是生長(zhǎng)得特別茁壯的禾稻，古人視嘉禾圖案為吉祥的象征。
