Michael: Hi Billy. How have things been?

Billy: Is that you, Michael? I haven't seen you for such a long time that I have forgotten what you look like!

Michael: I have been working from home these days.

Billy: Do you mean that you have been bludging?

Michael: No! I have been working from home.

Billy: Michael, the office is for work. Home is for relaxing!

Michael: Billy, these days more and more people work from home. It's called telecommuting.

Billy: That sounds ideal for me!

Michael: Why do you think that telecommuting would be perfect for you?

Billy: Because I could sleep in all day and still get paid for it!

  NEW WORDS

  1) Telecommuting: working from home

Some jobs are better suited to telecommuting than others. For instance, if you are a security guard, you probably cannot telecommute.

  2) Bludging: not working, being lazy

I know that I should work harder, but I prefer bludging and watching TV.

  3) Anachronism: something not in keeping with the times

Some people say that marriage is an anachronism in 2002, but I still like the romantic ideal of being with one person for the rest of my life.

The rapid development of the Internet, email and mobile phones has meant that the practice of driving or commuting to the office everyday is an anachronism. More and more people, especially technology workers, are turning to telecommuting and are working from home instead of going to the office everyday.

The temptation to just laze about the house is too great for some. Here are some ideas to think about to decide whether telecommuting is right for you.

Treat it like a regular work day:

You don't have to wear a suit, but be sure to get up, get dressed and ready for work - even if your commute is just a few steps to the den, rather than a long drive to the office.

  Keep your normal hours:

If you usually get into the office at 8 AM, report to your home office at the same time. Some people like to "clock in" at the time they usually leave for work, rather than when they arrive.

  Limit distractions:

One of the big benefits of telecommuting is that you can get rid of the interruptions of co-workers, so make sure you don't substitute that with dealing with children, neighbors, friends and so on (or spending time with the Playstation!).

  Set up a work area:

Ideally, this should be a desk or table away from your usual living area, such as in the den or spare room. If space is tight, think "portable," creating a work station that gives you easy access to essential items like office supplies, the telephone and computer, yet that you can quickly pack up and tuck away at the end of the day.

Bring the right type of work home:

Some works particularly those that require using huge volumes of files or resource materials that you couldn't possible transport, are better left for an in-office day. Tasks better suited to telecommuting include reading, writing, making phone calls, data processing and other jobs that can easily be performed independently.

Home working can be liberating. Home working can be fun. It can be convenient, flexible and satisfying. But it can also be very, very difficult - and, sometimes, just a little frustrating.

Jeff: When can I start working from home?

Joan: Well, your job is not really suitable for telecommuting.

  Jeff: What do you mean?

Joan: How would you be able to do my photocopying and filing?

Jeff: I could have an office at your house.

Joan: I'd rather stop working from home and come back to the office!
